Fashion Reactions on the 2014 Emmys Red Carpet.

The 2014 Emmy Awards was on Monday and as expected, got every one talking; from the fashion to the awards themselves! but you know we’ll be talking about the fashion ;))

The color red took a front seat in the color department followed by the metallic, the Grecian/ Egyptian look wasn’t far off, putting up a remarkable presence on the red carpet. Also, we saw a few red carpet risks that actually worked! namely Julia Roberts!

Allison Janney in a deep velvet dress. Lovely but the knot looks heavy…

Allison Williams in Giambattista Valli Couture. I absolutely love this dress! the fit, the colors, the hair and the lack of accessories puts all focus on the dress!

Amy-Poehler in a silver Theia dress. Silver was another color that ruled the night. This look was OK right?

Angela Bassett In Elisabetta Franchi – I don’t get the mean look on her face, but lovely dress. I like that she switched the belt…gives it a more Grecian/Egyptian look.

Camila-Alves in a Zuhair Murad Dress- Beautiful and simple; the hair, make up, accessories…

Cat Deeley in a pink ombre Burberry gown- is that a bow or fluff? looks pretty undecided.

Christina-Hendricks in a rich red Marchesa dress and a Lee Savage clutch- it’s not very often you see a redhead in all red looking so catchy! However I would have preferred if she had accessorized less and left the focus on the dress and her voluptuous curve alone.

Claire Danes in a Givenchy lace panelled embellished dress…. I like her hair but the make up seems a bit daunting.

Debra-Messing in a simple geometric gown- Not so flattering gown but I love the hair and make up.

Gwen Stefani in Versace- getting in touch with her silvery Italian side?

Halle Berry in Ellie Saab- Designers like Ellie Saab know fully well how to bring out the elegance in a woman… lovely hair,make up and smile…

Hayden-Panettiere in a metallic Lorena Sarbu column dress- I like it!

Heidi-Klum in Zac Posen- The ‘Coral Angel’ Zac Posen called her on the red carpet… very true. One of my best looks! The blonde beauty in this comfortable looking Coral dress, what could be better?

January-Jones in Prabal Gurung’s voluminous ballgown and Christian Louboutin shoes.. hmmm the hair, the shoes… love ém or hate ém?

Jessica-Paré in a Lanvin cocktail dress with Fred Leighton pendant and Louboutin heels- I love everything! great styling from the hair, make up accessories and the cocktail dress! this is one of the cocktail looks that was a hit for the night in my books!

Julia-Louis-Dreyfus in a custom Carolina Herrera halter gown- Elegant. Good enough for an Emmy!

Kaley Cuoco in Monique Lhuillier ball gown with a Swarovski clutch- the lower part of the dress looks unfinished or cut out,I just can’t find the right words…

Julia-Roberts in a cocktail dress by Ellie Saab and Louboutin heels- I hope I have these awesome looking legs when I’m 46 years old! This is one of her best looks yet!

Kerry Washington in Prada’s high slit design- not surprising this woman always comes out looking awesome!!!

Lena-Dunham in a Giambattista Valli button down and skirt- What’s with this woman and her clothes? Lena, you could get a stylist you know, and if you have one, fire her and get someone else!!!

Melissa McCarthy in Marchesa- One word Melissa- simple is better. A plus size should try to stay away from tulle.

Michelle Dockery In Rosie Assoulin- this is the kind of look that draws mixed feelings and for me I think it’s a nice surprise to the red carpet, the sharp colors, the overskirt…

Octavia Spencer- Lovely.I just love the way the dress drapes her body!

Mindy Kaling in a Kenzo column dress- A nice fit and color.

Natalie Dormer in color block J Mendel- This Game of Thrones star looks fit and simple in this dress. Nice hair and make up.

Uzo-Aduba looks victorious in her rich red flowing gown, Wish it had earned her an Emmy Award.

Minnie-Driver in Marchesa- simple and sophisticated.

Sarah-Hyland in Christian Syriano crop top and flowing skirt two piece. Nice risk. I love the hair and make up.

Sofia Vergara in Roberto Cavalli- Looking all feminine in white.

Sarah-Paulson in a black tulle polka dot dress- This dress could easily have been a hit without all the tulle, I wonder, was she going for a nest-y look?…I like her hair though.

Sarah-Silverman in Marni- She does look exceptional in black but maybe better ironing and steaming next time?

There you have it. The reds, blacks and silvers dominated. My best looks? Allison Williams, Julia Roberts,Heidi Klum,Kerry Washington… a lot more actually. What about you? let’s hear what you think. Hot? or Hmm…

What To Wear To… A Wedding.

Hello my stylish readers, we know that when invited to an event, one of the most important questions to ask is ‘What do I wear?’

Today we are going to answer the question of what to wear to a wedding. If you live in Nigeria, that question may be answered for you by the long time introduction of what we call ‘Aso ebi’  which are fabrics usually chosen by those getting married for friends and relatives to sew so that their occasion is marked in a more colorful and uniform way. In that case, your task will be to find a good tailor and a good design that fits your body really well and of course you need to accessorize in a way that makes you stand out; if you do remember my post about Finding the right statement jewelry for occasions you know what to do in that department.

If you don’t belong to that circle then you may need to take certain things into consideration most importantly the venue of the wedding. Is it indoor or out doors? If it’s outdoors, you might want to avoid heels that keep sinking into the grass or sand or a dress that keeps being swept by the wind.

Indoors means you can go more formal with structured cuts, even if not formal, think something you would wear to a formal restaurant.

 

Is it a destination wedding? on an island? by the beach perhaps? then you should look for something casual and breezy.

Also find out maybe through the invitation, if it is a formal wedding, are there color codes? if it’s in the evening, evening gowns and tuxedos or formal suits may be expected.

If you are taking part in the wedding, a parent of the bride or groom or some other important role, you may want to be more careful in picking your attire.

A general rule is also that you avoid wearing white as this is a color reserved for the bride alone and you don’t want to come off as being disrespectful.

An off white dress may not be a bad idea, just make sure it’s as far from the bride’s dress as possible like this dress above.

 

On the flip side, wearing black appears mournful and disapproving too unless it’s in the form of a suit and in my opinion, a nice little black dress for say an evening wedding will do just fine. Accessorize well and pick a fabric that is fun like sequins or silk. Also avoiding super tight, super short and super revealing outfits may just be a good thing to consider when looking out for something to wear…

No matter what kind of wedding it is, unless specifically called for, do not wear jeans, flip-flops, shorts and tee shirts. Make the effort to look nice and well dressed. Put some thought into what you wear.

In the end, if the invitation does not give off any clues on how to dress and you are not sure, call the bride and ask or a member of the family or just wear a decent dress with a good cut and length and sensible shoes ( or put an extra pair in your car just in case!).
