Fashion From The London Film Festival

LFF Emily blunt in Roland Mouret at the galaHey stylish readers, If you live in London then over the next about two weeks, you will be surrounded by lots of glamor and fashion from the many movie premieres. London Film Festival which celebrates the best in British and International film began yesterday. There was the gala night hosted by IWC and then we had some movie premieres. Here are a few of the red carpet appearances…

I like the Peach and cream-colored dress by Roland Mouret on Emily Blunt. The cut and color suits her so well! You really cannot go wrong in a black dress and JLaw’s Dior dress was a hit don’t you think?…even though I’m not a fan of the blazer/jacket cut dress styles and the dress looks a bit crumped up, but otherwise she did come out cute. There’s the red lipstick on Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams which does make the 17-year-old look so grown up and elegant! not to mention the blue Jacquard dress by Sister Jane she’s wearing!

So, my opinionated stylish readers, what do you think? Drop a word or two ok?

Hugs:))

Dreamy Accessories From the 2015 SS FW You’ll Love!

From New York to London and Milan, we’ve seen beautiful clothes from our favorite designers for the next time the spring and Summer fashion season comes upon us, which of course will be in 2015. I’ve shown you only a few of the awesome clothes but we all know(me especially) that clothes will not be best appreciated without the accessories that are styled with them. Bags, shoes, Jewelry and even make up all put the looks together in the designers’ unique ways and we can’t afford to miss their efforts can we? From clutches to barrel bags and hobos to minaudieres, we have been wowed.

What’s your style personality? classic and chic? boho or lady? seek and you will find the accessory to fit your desires… also notice the bushy eyebrow trend still very present and the turbans from the Missoni runway.  There are strappy sandals at every turn and I love the embellished flats and bejeweled T straps by Dolce & Gabbana. the Burberry sneakers are a beauty along with their Bee Bags which are already on the arms on celebrities and models like Cara Delevingne. I’m sure it wasn’t lost on the designers too as they went all out to offer for the buying of course, accessories we can be sure to see hitting the stores soon…

Awesome pieces! Anya Hindmarch, known for her statement bags was inspired this time by the stickers and pencil cases we lived for in school. Her usual tarsals were on hand and bags in block colors. I love ’em! these are definitely going in my A list! What do you think?

Trends & My Picks From the 2015 Spring/Summer Fashion Week.

Hello stylistas, how are you all doing? So, we know the 2015 Spring Summer Fashion week has been on and in my category I call ‘Beautiful Things’ , I bring you my pick on the different looks that caught my eye and got them fixated.

Trends? yes there were a lot of looks that stuck out, far out!trends you’re going to be seeing a lot of before next year. First off though, you will notice that most designers are beginning to agree on one thing- that less is more! even eccentric designers like Vivienne Westwood was quite femme friendly with her Red Label collection.

There was the sporty trend on the runways of the likes of Altuzarra,Preen by Thornton Bregazzi,Topshop Unique and Alexander Wang. Gingham print from Oscar de la Renta, Michael Kors, to Diane Von Furstenberg! I loved the blooming flower prints in tulips, sunflower and other bold flowers that showed off in abundance on the runways of de la Renta, Carolina Herrera and even Victoria Beckham. We saw tribal designs with the likes of Donna Karen who is never afraid to show her intrigue with this print and then another favorite of mine, the bold stripes. This was everywhere and in fun diverse colors! This is a must have for your wardrobe I tell you!

Vera Wang and Versace made us fall in love with black all over again, reminding us why it is the go to color for the stylish woman. The black and white staple and all white ensemble is here to stay and we saw why on most of the collections. Added to those were pastels in pink and blue (De la renta, DVF) as well as a misty refreshing tones of yellow and red.

The fabrics reminded us why these designers are so-called as they used the most delicate and exquisite fabrics like the lovely silk organza and linen blend fabrics to show off their art in more ways than one. Sheer fabrics were everywhere as well as light floral prints as seen on the runways of Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren and Vera Wang. Shiny, glitzy and glitter was also a mix in Hilfiger’s collection and  Monique Lhuillier’s. Lace was also a considerable addition that lit up the feminine looks on the runway, creating nice dresses and separates… speaking of separates, there was a bit more seen on the runway this week and yes, the eyelets and laser cuts were not lost on us:

My Trend for The Week- Print Pants.

Print Pants have stood the test of Seasons, from Spring to Summer and into Fall. I love them because they add an interesting look to an otherwise boring ensemble and gives the wearer a look worth investing in.

H& M

Prints differ from florals to abstracts and from bold to subtler hues but whatever your preference of colors or pattern, shopping for and owning one in your wardrobe won’t be a bad idea, no? depending on what season you’re in, you could up your look with ankle boots, flats, flip-flops or heels and depending on where you’re going to, you could dress it up for work, or down for the beach or a walk in the outdoors.

H&M

Forever 21

Forever 21

If you would be so bold as to shop one, let me make a few suggestions, for starters, shop one that suits your body type. If you have a pear or full hourglass shape, you may need to stick to those pants with vertical or smaller prints. Even then, try to make sure the fabric is not bulky. Go for something silky or jersey or some light cotton.

Asos

For those strawberry or athletic builds, have fun with your prints because prints tend to draw attention to the lower part of your body.

I like animal print too, have you noticed how easily they have become a classic? but when styling it, make sure the other pieces are low-key. If you want to go bold, mix the prints in a subtle way and make sure the colors tell a similar story. Here’s an idea for you…

So if you want a trend that is here to stay, pick up a pair of print pants. Cropped or relaxed, straight cut  or slouchy, your print trousers will definitely add character to your look and who knows, maybe get a conversation started…

So before I sign off , I’ve got to ask, would you wear this? I know I do! It is definitely on my A list and in my wardrobe ;))!

Buy it. Wear it. Love it!!! – My Ankara Peplum Top, Purse and Shoes.

Hello my ever stylish readers, today, I introduce to you a new category I have called Buy it,Wear it, Love it!!! (BWL)  This is my shopping and styling experience brought to you firsthand. I thought it would be nice to share these experiences in pictures- where I shop when I need to get certain pieces of clothing, beauty products or accessories either for myself or  friends and well, anyone else and then style the pieces, items or outfits in one or more ways meanwhile telling you how much I loved the experience and the items.

If you live in these areas, you could probably pop into these shops to find and feed your own shopping desires too.

So last week I had to pick out some Ankara items for myself, I had a lunch event to attend with my family and to be honest, I’m not really the everyday wearing  Ankara kind of person but this time I wanted to look different and chic for this lunch. I decided to go check out this shop called Shona 100%  that only retails everything Ankara from earrings, yes earrings, to umbrellas, shoes and everything in between! Look:

Eventually I happened upon this lovely peplum top in red, yellow and black, a front zipper and cap sleeves. The cut was fantastic and the color complemented my skin like nothing else!

???????????????????????????????

Then this peep toe pumps in pink, black, green and yellow Ankara print caught my eye also. Hmm…

This purse, not really me but one rule in shopping? don’t say no till you try it! ….and I loved it!!!!

???????????????????????????????

DSC02862

So I settled for this unique look: The red print Ankara top, The pink, yellow, a hint of red and black purse and the pumps in the same color family as the purse. Yay!

DSC02875

Styling it was easy as all I had to do was find a piece to play down all the bright colors. I decided on these Tommy Hilfiger blue wash jeans…it was lunch after all! I added these loop earrings, the gold cuffs and bangles to accessorize and then my favorite red lipstick too…I was in a zesty mood, a nice outfit will do that for you, you know.

???????????????????????????????

Notice the embellishment around the neck area and across the fabric of the top?

???????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????Sorry I had to take this call…

???????????????????????????????

Nice nice nice. I can now say that I love every item I bought. Lesson learnt? don’t be afraid to try new looks, you might just love it! and big thanks to my sweet, sweet husband for not rolling his eyes when I asked him to take these photos of me!

Looking forward to my next shopping experience with you all!!!

Hugs :))

Your Best Statement Jewelry For Work.

Hello Stylish readers, no small talk because I’m so excited- my new-found love for statement  jewelry just stepped up! so now that you have your arms loaded with the right statement jewelry for events, should we perhaps veer to the work side of things?

I know dressing for work can be boring and as if it were not bad enough, some offices give off dress codes like it was promotion worthy! grey, black, navy and anything neutral is the go-to for most work places and that can be daunting… but I say, not entirely! It could also serve as the perfect backdrop for the best of accessories! while you may be sanctioned for wearing out-of-place outfits or colors to work, no one is going to fine you for some really dazzling jewelry can they?… but I’m not saying to go chunky like the rap stars of the 80s or 90s though.

This is what I mean:

IMG-20140720-WA0041IMG-20140720-WA0005IMG-20140720-WA0006IMG-20140720-WA0007IMG-20140720-WA0017IMG-20140720-WA0042IMG-20140720-WA0024IMG-20140720-WA0016IMG-20140720-WA0018IMG-20140720-WA0019IMG-20140720-WA0027IMG-20140720-WA0028IMG-20140720-WA0032IMG-20140720-WA0034IMG-20140720-WA0033IMG-20140720-WA0035IMG-20140720-WA0037IMG-20140720-WA0036IMG-20140720-WA0044IMG-20140721-WA0000IMG-20140721-WA0001IMG-20140721-WA0002IMG-20140721-WA0005IMG-20140721-WA0008IMG-20140721-WA0007IMG-20140721-WA0010IMG-20140721-WA0011IMG-20140721-WA0012IMG-20140721-WA0013IMG-20140720-WA0015IMG-20140720-WA0014

I honestly love these. The simple loops with the green and red pearls, those earrings like rested wings, the corals against the black dress, those huge grey pearls and oh! the art deco intertwined piece of gold, with rich blue stones are probably my best look outs!

Do shop these lovely pieces and start every Monday morning with a spring on your step!

Finding The Right Statement Jewelry For Occasions

I know, I know you’re reading the post topic and thinking, here we go again with the statement jewelry thing again!…. well, you’re right, here we go again but believe me when I say I have good reason- you know I have told you how important statement jewelry is to your quest to being a better ‘stylista’  ? but did I specifically tell you how to wear these statement jewelries?…mmm or did I?

OK Let’s be honest, we African women know how to put it all out when we have a big society wedding to attend or any event that involves us spending hours with the tailor making sure our ‘Aso ebi’ (Occasion Uniform) outfits are made to fit, our make up is top order and let’s not forget the nails and ‘Gele’ (traditional head tie); but so does every other stylish woman who’s going to be attending that same event especially if they share the same ‘Aso ebi’ as you! So ladies,  this is how you stand out, with your accessories! purses, shoes, pins and what we will be talking about today, statement making jewelry!

So how do you get the right accessories that speak volumes without you having to say a single word? that gets conversations started and just refuses to let you lose the smile on your face because of the approving nods and glances coming your way? whether you are the celebrant or the invited, shop jewelry like this when you need to make an appearance and, you know, thank me later!

How to Combine Colors in Your Wardrobe.

Combining colors is a science!  …but something that can be learned. You see a man or woman putting together an outfit that stands out not because of the fit and fabric but because of the really catchy combination of colors and you’re wondering how they did it.

Well, you know it’s my job to hook you up with information that will help you step up your title as a ‘Stylista’ and if you want more information, do not forget you could always email or call me up if you live in Abuja or Nigeria to do a more intense color analysis for you and your wardrobe.

color palette

A Personal Color Analysis is a complete check of a person’s color season (Deep/Light/Medium Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer), what colors on the color wheel (remember the color wheel from arts class? yes, one and only) best suit that person’s skin color and how to match colors in this color season to produce outfits that agree with that color season.

Notice how you dress up sometimes and people ask you if you’re ok? ill? well, if you really are not ill, then it’s because the colors do not go with your skin tone and has either ended up making your skin look dull or sickly. Sometimes you go out and everyone comments on how great you look and how you look good in that color? yes, that’s one of your season’s color. Much as these are all required in choosing an appropriate wardrobe for yourself, it is far from realistic to follow this strictly as you as well know that there are colors you like that may not agree with your season’s colors and you definitely will not stop wearing them. What you do then is learn to combine these colors in ways that still make you look good or in tones that bring out your good side.

So let’s not get confused or in my case confusing, i’ll just give you a few guides to knowing how to mix and match colors OK?

First we have to know that in dressing, we have neutral colors which we can combine with most of these colors on the color wheel. They are black, white, grey, dark brown and dark blue. For men however, be careful because with a blue suit for instance, there are some colors that just won’t go so for the more flattering contrasts and accents, try orange based tones but for harmony, pick colors in the same color family.

harmonious side by side

The Color Wheel

It’s really about how you see colors and what colors are can be pleasing to the eyes when combined. You need to know the primary, secondary and tertiary colors. we use these colors everyday but going further, you need to consider that these colors have Value (the lightness or darkness of a color, this is what makes sky blue different from navy or dark blue), Hues (red, blue etc, basically the color, the colors in the color wheel are made of hues and in different temperatures- warm as in red, orange, yellow or cool as in blue, blue-violet and purple.) and the Chroma (the purity of the color- clarity, intensity, brightness or dullness of a hue e.g yellow and mustard or lemon.)

value key achromatic

With these you can create a color scheme( a mix of colors in hue, value and chroma) that makes it pleasing to the eyes, interesting and varied:

Achromatic (Black, white and grey)

Achromatic

Monochromatic (colors from one hue adding black, white or grey or other colors creating a safe but harmonious effect.)

monochrome

Complementary (combining colors opposite each other on the color wheel giving you a bold contrasting feel to your outfits.) e.g red and green, blue and orange or yellow etc. Complementary colors have the same components of the 3 primary colors which in effect bring equilibrium to the eyes because the primary colors are a natural complementary color combination but because they have a tendency to be too intense to the eyes, I would recommend you use intermediate colors like red- orange and blue- green.

To create a more sophisticated palette, use complementary colors in darker hues also like mustard and violet or cobalt blue and burnt orange (see my styling examples below):

Complementary Colors

Combined Harmonious (using complementary colors and then livening them up with accents- Accents are highlights in small quantities with a high purity of color often complementary to the main color; to create an exciting effect).

For men, accents can appear in choice places like:

  • Neckties are the most common accent for men.  They look best when they are either from a similar color family as the shirt beneath them (lavender tie over a light blue shirt, for example) or a complementary color for contrast (such as a burgundy tie over a white-and-green striped shirt).
  • Pocket squares are like neckties in terms of decorative function, but are far less widely used.  Include one in your outfits to add a bit of stylish flash.  They should pair with the suit jacket or sport coat in much the same way that the necktie pairs with the shirt:  either joining it in a similar color scheme or contrasting with it in a complementary fashion.  When wearing both, be aware that the necktie and the pocket square should never match — they are two separate accents!
  • Jewelry should generally be understated on a man.  The basic rule of thumb is to keep all the metals matching:  either gold tones or silver, never both.  Watches, rings, cufflinks, and earrings if you wear one all fall under the rule.  The only exception is a wedding band, which can be worn with anything — its significance is recognized to be set apart from the rules of fashion.  If you do happen to wear colored jewelry (unusual on a man), be sure that the colored stone/glass either contrasts or mimics the colors of the larger outfit in the same way as the other accents.
  • Briefcases and other bags are rarely a perfect match (unless you happen to have the money for a matching bag with each suit and shirt).  Most men find it easiest to own a black bag and a brown bag and match the bag to their shoes and belt.  Blue-tone canvases do well with brown leather, more neutral bases go best with black, and brighter colors may go with one or the other depending on where they fall on the color wheel.
  • Glasses can be particularly frustrating if you need to wear them daily and only own one set of frames.  Any kind of distinct color will be a jarring note in outfits that don’t go well with that particular color.  Try to stick to narrow frames with a muted metallic or black color if you’re planning on wearing your glasses with all of your outfits.

Analog/Harmonious (colors that lie side by side on the color wheel. You can see them everywhere in nature- green and yellow plants, red and yellow sun etc. They come from a common hue when mixed in the color wheel.

Not all your outfits will follow the color wheel relationships rigidly.  Worry not if they don’t, instead look for combinations that you feel comfortable in, using the color wheel schemes as a very basic guideline.  Personally I prefer to do 3 colors at most a time, nothing more but know that a splash of difference here or there is what makes the outfit yours.  A basic understanding of the color wheel is just a tool to get you started.  And hopefully I’ve helped out with that!
