My Trend For The Week- Monochrome

Hello Guys, my trend for the week is for you! do you just get a color you love and want to wear it all over? well, you’re on trend! the monochromatic look is a way to add color to your wardrobe without looking ridiculous or like you tried too hard… really you do not want to send that message! carrying off this look keeps you stylish and on trend.

Tones like grey or black are not hard to pull off in this way and we know that blue is the next best thing to being conservative and trendy too so if you’re a beginner at this, take a step away from the classic black into the world of blue. What I’m trying to say is that these colors are just right for work if you want to swing in that direction. However, if you are able to take on more exciting colors, be sure to remember these tips:

  • Try to use different shades of that color except it’s a suit. Break it up by using pieces with textures like chambray shirts, tweed blazers or knit ties.
  • Don’t be afraid to layer up. With the same color, you could do all sorts of textures.

There you have it guys, the pros are endless with this look- no need to combine colors and match up different tones; all you have to do is remember that less is more when using bright colors!

Have a great weekend.

Hugs:))

5 Ways A Man Can Look Stylish Without Breaking The Bank.

We all know that when it comes to men’s fashion and shopping for good pieces, we have to get extra wise and extra imaginative. Some of the rules for shopping for women’s clothes do apply to men and while we all love to appear put together as though our total outfit cost a pretty penny or kobo depending on where you are, we are not always able to spend that much, I mean let’s face it, a brother has to eat, pay the rent, pick up the bills, I could go on… so you do need to spend wisely!

48ee5bc96835cfa0bf386850281bdfed

How does one look like a highly paid banker or investor without spending like one? by learning how to shop wisely and learning how to put a great outfit together. You could buy a $1000 blazer from Armani or one from Zara that cost $100 it doesn’t matter, what matters is how it looks on you! just building up your wardrobe? buying affordable outfits will work better for you. Yes, an Armani blazer will last you dozens of years and feel great when you wear it, but you will also feel great in a Zara blazer that fits you to the tee I guarantee you!

1.  Do your research, take the time to find out stores that retail good and affordable clothes that fit your lifestyle and style personality. Are you conservative or you tend to wear most casual looks through the week? pick out places that stock a good variety of your kind of clothes and compare prices. And guys, don’t be a store snob, search out stores you previously ruled out as too crappy or too expensive, you could be pleasantly surprised. Narrow your find to shops that have the best offers for the best quality and fit within your budget.

2. If you buy good basics and learn how to put them together, you will be on your way to a stylish makeover. I will be the first to tell you that your clothes do not have to be made by Tom ford to be stylish( though it would be nice if they were), it’s a common misconception that if they were stylish and of good quality, they would be expensive, yes to be honest that’s true in many ways, but a lot of affordable basics – the white shirt, a pair of dark rinse jeans, a good suit or blazer in black, grey and navy could really be of good quality if  you looked carefully. What catches most buyers’ eyes are accessories and pieces like ties or wristwatches so that’s what retailers tend to make people spend more on…First make sure you have  the really good separates in your wardrobe and then go from there. This is not to say you cannot find affordable accessories, depending on your taste, you could find really good ties, shoes, cuff links and other accessories that gives you a stylish feel with affordable prices, what’s important is your creative ability to combine these looks in successful ways.

3. Good grooming could take your look from being crappy to extraordinary!!! A contemporary or conservative haircut could even make you look younger or older depending on what you’re going for.. if that’s your thing. Try to keep your nails well cut and clean and unless you only leave your house in the wee hours to places where no one is allowed near you, make sure you leave home smelling great all the time. Also, keep your shoes shined, your pockets empty, avoid bulky bags and do not chew gum in meetings or any where public for that matter!!! With these basic tips, you are sure to make a big impression when it comes to good grooming and sense of style. Though it might seem superficial, the care one takes with one’s appearance is actually a reflection of the type of person a man is, so go figure.

sudan-tahirah-main-african-clothing-traditional

4. Colors and tones that are trendy or suit your color tend to make you look stylish and great. you look good in blue? find ways to build it into your look, or grey, brown and even brighter hues like red and orange.

ed281d5b21039fe4507fc2d9774bc80d

5. Finally, there’s nothing worse than ill-fitting clothing, whether too loose or too tight! Ensure that your shirt is fitted and that it flatters your body type and minimises any flaws. You can guarantee this if you get your clothes tailored by a good tailor. Suggestions for styles, colors and cuts can come from a tailor who’s good at his work and he can actually up your fashion ante for you.

So guys, learn to create awesome outfits with affordable clothes before you even consider the high-priced items and once you’re ready to spend big, you’ll already have a killer wardrobe at your disposal. A stylish man is one regardless of the price tags hanging off the clothes in his wardrobe so build up your style reputation with ease and this time,no pressure!

Hugs:))

NORMCORE TRAINERS

As we all know, normcore is all the rage even in luxury! now that the  recent obsession with colorful 1990s-inspired trainers is winding down, it looks like we’re about to take a more pared-back approach to our footwear what with the sandals and Birkenstocks!

How to Combine Colors in Your Wardrobe.

Combining colors is a science!  …but something that can be learned. You see a man or woman putting together an outfit that stands out not because of the fit and fabric but because of the really catchy combination of colors and you’re wondering how they did it.

Well, you know it’s my job to hook you up with information that will help you step up your title as a ‘Stylista’ and if you want more information, do not forget you could always email or call me up if you live in Abuja or Nigeria to do a more intense color analysis for you and your wardrobe.

color palette

A Personal Color Analysis is a complete check of a person’s color season (Deep/Light/Medium Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer), what colors on the color wheel (remember the color wheel from arts class? yes, one and only) best suit that person’s skin color and how to match colors in this color season to produce outfits that agree with that color season.

Notice how you dress up sometimes and people ask you if you’re ok? ill? well, if you really are not ill, then it’s because the colors do not go with your skin tone and has either ended up making your skin look dull or sickly. Sometimes you go out and everyone comments on how great you look and how you look good in that color? yes, that’s one of your season’s color. Much as these are all required in choosing an appropriate wardrobe for yourself, it is far from realistic to follow this strictly as you as well know that there are colors you like that may not agree with your season’s colors and you definitely will not stop wearing them. What you do then is learn to combine these colors in ways that still make you look good or in tones that bring out your good side.

So let’s not get confused or in my case confusing, i’ll just give you a few guides to knowing how to mix and match colors OK?

First we have to know that in dressing, we have neutral colors which we can combine with most of these colors on the color wheel. They are black, white, grey, dark brown and dark blue. For men however, be careful because with a blue suit for instance, there are some colors that just won’t go so for the more flattering contrasts and accents, try orange based tones but for harmony, pick colors in the same color family.

harmonious side by side

The Color Wheel

It’s really about how you see colors and what colors are can be pleasing to the eyes when combined. You need to know the primary, secondary and tertiary colors. we use these colors everyday but going further, you need to consider that these colors have Value (the lightness or darkness of a color, this is what makes sky blue different from navy or dark blue), Hues (red, blue etc, basically the color, the colors in the color wheel are made of hues and in different temperatures- warm as in red, orange, yellow or cool as in blue, blue-violet and purple.) and the Chroma (the purity of the color- clarity, intensity, brightness or dullness of a hue e.g yellow and mustard or lemon.)

value key achromatic

With these you can create a color scheme( a mix of colors in hue, value and chroma) that makes it pleasing to the eyes, interesting and varied:

Achromatic (Black, white and grey)

Achromatic

Monochromatic (colors from one hue adding black, white or grey or other colors creating a safe but harmonious effect.)

monochrome

Complementary (combining colors opposite each other on the color wheel giving you a bold contrasting feel to your outfits.) e.g red and green, blue and orange or yellow etc. Complementary colors have the same components of the 3 primary colors which in effect bring equilibrium to the eyes because the primary colors are a natural complementary color combination but because they have a tendency to be too intense to the eyes, I would recommend you use intermediate colors like red- orange and blue- green.

To create a more sophisticated palette, use complementary colors in darker hues also like mustard and violet or cobalt blue and burnt orange (see my styling examples below):

Complementary Colors

Combined Harmonious (using complementary colors and then livening them up with accents- Accents are highlights in small quantities with a high purity of color often complementary to the main color; to create an exciting effect).

For men, accents can appear in choice places like:

  • Neckties are the most common accent for men.  They look best when they are either from a similar color family as the shirt beneath them (lavender tie over a light blue shirt, for example) or a complementary color for contrast (such as a burgundy tie over a white-and-green striped shirt).
  • Pocket squares are like neckties in terms of decorative function, but are far less widely used.  Include one in your outfits to add a bit of stylish flash.  They should pair with the suit jacket or sport coat in much the same way that the necktie pairs with the shirt:  either joining it in a similar color scheme or contrasting with it in a complementary fashion.  When wearing both, be aware that the necktie and the pocket square should never match — they are two separate accents!
  • Jewelry should generally be understated on a man.  The basic rule of thumb is to keep all the metals matching:  either gold tones or silver, never both.  Watches, rings, cufflinks, and earrings if you wear one all fall under the rule.  The only exception is a wedding band, which can be worn with anything — its significance is recognized to be set apart from the rules of fashion.  If you do happen to wear colored jewelry (unusual on a man), be sure that the colored stone/glass either contrasts or mimics the colors of the larger outfit in the same way as the other accents.
  • Briefcases and other bags are rarely a perfect match (unless you happen to have the money for a matching bag with each suit and shirt).  Most men find it easiest to own a black bag and a brown bag and match the bag to their shoes and belt.  Blue-tone canvases do well with brown leather, more neutral bases go best with black, and brighter colors may go with one or the other depending on where they fall on the color wheel.
  • Glasses can be particularly frustrating if you need to wear them daily and only own one set of frames.  Any kind of distinct color will be a jarring note in outfits that don’t go well with that particular color.  Try to stick to narrow frames with a muted metallic or black color if you’re planning on wearing your glasses with all of your outfits.

comp colors

Analog/Harmonious (colors that lie side by side on the color wheel. You can see them everywhere in nature- green and yellow plants, red and yellow sun etc. They come from a common hue when mixed in the color wheel.

Harmonious Colors

Triad (3 colors on the color wheel that are equal distances from each other but balances the eyes)

complementry color scheme

Not all your outfits will follow the color wheel relationships rigidly.  Worry not if they don’t, instead look for combinations that you feel comfortable in, using the color wheel schemes as a very basic guideline.  Personally I prefer to do 3 colors at most a time, nothing more but know that a splash of difference here or there is what makes the outfit yours.  A basic understanding of the color wheel is just a tool to get you started.  And hopefully I’ve helped out with that!

Remember, if you want a personal consult, send an email OK?

hugs :))

5 Top Fashion Mistakes Men Make.

Hello my ever faithful stylish readers. Having a lovely day? well guys, today we take the top 5 fashion faux pas a few of you carry out on a daily basis.

I’ve said it before that dressing up as a male in these fashion times is not as easy as it used to be but it is definitely more interesting and fun! There are more options to choose from as compared to the classic blue, black, grey and dark blue of old! There are newer rules to follow and if you want to be taken seriously in the corporate or social world, while you are allowed to, hey, even advised to break all the  rules if you are an entertainer of some sort, in the real world where 95% of us still live, looking sane is still expected. I’ve said it before (I seem to be recalling a lot of stuff I’ve said before…age?) that a person is not necessarily stylish because they wear expensive clothes, they are stylish because of their ability to mix and match outfits and put specific colors together and if a man can do that for himself or invariably find someone who can do that for him, he is on his way to super- styledom!

So let’s get to it, you may not be the man down the street who wears his socks and sandals every day past your house, or the guy next door with his square toe shoes in his short-sleeved shirt and tie, but let’s see how far you’ve gone to keep your look fresh and stylish … and oh, if you score two out five of these, then you already are on the fashion faux pas trail!

1. Over sized Suits: Or over sized anything for that matter! wearing clothes that do not fit you in any way does not say anything positive no matter what you may think! keep it just right- not too loose and not tight no matter how much you want to show off that nicely toned body of yours, wearing clothes that are just right does much more for you than tight clothes will ever do, take it from me. If however you hardly find your fit off the rack, then find a good tailor and keep him on speed dial!

makeover

2. Bad trouser breaks: This is one mistake men very often make. We get that cuffs on chinos and khakis is an ongoing fad we are not sure we want to see for too long but the normal length you should aim for in your trousers, chinos or khakis should be a slight or quarter break that ends at the top or at most, the middle of your back heel giving you a slight fold in front also. Too short and they tend to look undersized and too long will give you puddles that make you look just bad!

trousers-break

3. Not matching your trousers, shoes or socks properly: The rule is to match your socks with your trousers and not with your shoes! The reason it’s important to match socks with your pants is that when you have to take your shoes off or sit down and your socks are exposed, socks that coordinate with your pants make your outfit appear more fluid. On the other hand, socks that don’t match your pants will break up an otherwise awesome ensemble.

socks-and-pants

tumblr_inline_mpd5gbm6OM1qz4rgp

Find the socks color that best matches the shade of your trousers for example, black socks should go with black trousers, brown socks with brown trousers.and if you’re going for a monochromatic look, your shoes also;  For other trouser colors, choose carefully but when in doubt, a darker color in a close shade will do. Note that sporty white socks will only go with sporty shoes, nothing else! sorry but I had to make that bold for the style rebels to see 😉 . Also make sure you wear your dress socks with dress trousers not sporty socks. When not dressed formally though, you could mix trendy colors and show off your ability to match colors but be careful when you are trying to pull off this look.

download

Matching your shoes and pants should be pretty easy- black shoes go with black pants, never brown and vice versa. For other color shoes and pants to match, you could check out   http://www.thefineyounggentleman.com/pants/what-color-shoes-to-wear-with-what-color-pants/, so here’s a little tip, invest in a pair of dark blue shoes and socks as well as your black and brown.

blog. threads.com

shoecombinations

Shoe combinations- Fashionbeans.com: Blue trousers = Brown or Black shoes. Grey Trousers= Brown or Black Shoes. Brown Trousers= Brown Shoes. Black Trousers= Black Shoes

4. A fat Wallet: And I don’t mean it in a good way (being able to pay for pricey stuff). A fat wallet is a wallet stuffed with needless business cards, old receipts and other things you have no business carrying about but do anyway. When you stuff all that in your wallet,  it becomes a burden in your trousers for everyone to see! Here are the cons of having a fat wallet in your back pockets: it’s unsightly, it puts a dent to your smooth suave look, sitting on it will give you back ache and do you really need to carry all those business cards and old receipts around?? so let’s see, what are the pros? None!

FatWalletStock

5. Wearing the wrong belt color:Dress shoes should go with dress belts and casual shoes with casual belts.

dressvscasual_diagram2

Added to that, you could match the strap of your watch if it’s leather to your belt if you really want to go all the way, but as a rule of thumb, the tone of your watch strap (not as necessary in my opinion) , your belt and shoes should be the same for formal wear and for smart casual, they should generally be in the same color family and tone as long as it’s not too far off, same goes for texture and shine. If you are dressing down though, you could do something in the same color family but not match- match like chestnut and chocolate or burnt orange and chestnut.
belt-shoes-matching-0509-lg

…And other things: A man’s jewelry should be his wristwatch, wedding ring and cuff links only especially for formal attire but unless he’s a rap or rock star, a simple bracelet could be added for casual clothes.

download (1)

And you know we have to talk about the tie: The size of the tie is really up to you skinny or normal but the length must be long enough so that the tip barely touches the top of your belt buckle…yes Idris Elba! …and finally,If you’re dressed formally, a backpack laptop bag or carrier looks juvenile as against a sling bag which looks mature and appropriate.

So how did you score? no worries, our aim is to make you more stylish so yes, pressure!

Later,

Stylish Ways To Wear Black.

Hey Stylish readers, This post goes to say one thing- Orange may be the new black this season, but everyone needs a ‘Staple in the wardrobe, no color’ color that takes you in and out of season and that color definitely has to be black!

Although black could be elegant, classy, easy to wear and slimming, for men it looks just as good, ageless and suave to say the very least! but it can very well be very boring and hard to pull off on a regular basis. That is why I would like to show you ways to style this color without looking mournful or repetitive. So here are a few rules to follow:

Rule Number 1: Mix Textures

Fur, Leather, Cotton, Wool, Satin, Silk, suede all come out looking very classy when they are all in black. Want to look edgy but not too out there? try mixing these textures and fabrics- smooth satin with soft suede, leather with fluffy fur or something sheer.

Some designers take the liberty of mixing  these various textures for us but you could go the extra mile and add something to your look…which brings us to rule number two:

Rule Number 2: Accessorize.

Accessories as you already know, is your best friend for a stylish wardrobe and a must for you to pull off this look on a regular basis. Get those bold necklaces working and a pop of bold colors on your hand bags, belts and shoes should speak volumes. Even neutrals like white, gold and Camel are not only ‘ trés chic’ but timeless. If you’re a guy, make sure your shoes, tie and belt tells the story in a good way…

Rule Number 3: Fit

We know black is slimming but nothing else can also exaggerate your look for the worse! Make sure your outfit fits your body in every way especially if you are wearing leather or satin or any other fabric that shines.

Rule Number 4: Your Make Up

Black agrees with all skin tones but let’s not push it by letting you go out bare faced! your make up is very important for the classy look as it also adds contrast to this basic and changes a look from day to night.  A pop of Orange (I had to go there ;)) or pink lipstick will make you look oh-so-trendy and summer-y and red lipstick will definitely bring on all the elegance you need!

So style yourself happy this holiday and remember to wear the appropriate fabric for the weather, wool, fur and heavy fabrics should be worn when its cold and you need a weather-friendly but  trendy outfit and when it’s hot and breezy, cotton, linen, satin and any other lighter breathable fabrics will keep you going!

With these rules on hand, your black on black style should be second to none! I want Feedbacks OK?

Guys, You’ve Got to Shop These Menswear Trends From Milan FW 2015.

Crisp white shirts, Color Blocks, Floral prints, Stripes, Washed out and ripped Denim, Minimalist tailoring and Sharp cuts in wool, silk and linen, all made in palettes of blue, yellow, orange and fiery reds and basics of camel, white and black! whew! (taking notes?) there was also some shimmer, mesh and blazers in stripes, floral and prints.

This is your trend roll call from the runways of the Milan Fashion Week 2015 and they are smoking hot! some designers were about food, fruits and flowers like Etro, Cavalli, while others were about the stripes and window panes. I was wowed by the Emporio Armani collection totally in black and white with a bit of his customary blue but so masculine, I was taken over by the entire collection!

Accessories complemented the looks as white, brown and black as well as colorful bags and shoes strutted along. Calfskin sandals, slip ons, moccasins, sneakers and lovely two-tone loafers were officially celebrated as the footwear for summer.

Men who are tired of the boring looks and colors of menswear fashion need not worry about this one as fabrics and cuts while still minimal, were made more interesting in their colors and themes.

Dressing for your age- Men in their late 30s and above.

After celebrating our fathers worldwide, I think it’s nice we take a look at how fashion should work for them, it’s no use buying your dad a trendy piece as gift he’ll never use or know how to use! Dressing for men has been pretty basic … until the era of the metro sexual man begun that is! now men’s trends are just as important in the scheme of things as women. If your dressing is as basic as my dad’s then you have nothing to lose but if you’re a trendsetter of your own, then feel at home!

At the end of the day though, once you hit your late 30s  as a man, creating great style should be more of your thing than following after the trends. A stylish man beats all odds and is relevant in and out of season…or trends.Being a die-hard trend follower at this stage just makes you look desperate to hang on to your diminishing youth! so the word on your mind should be style and not trends. Sometimes the two may agree with you but when in doubt, stick to your personal style – that is what should carry you from your 30s through your 40s and up to your 50s! The words tasteful, elegant, affordable fashion should be at your fingertips.

KEEPING FIT is the first way to go in looking good and this goes for both women and men in this age range. Looking good in clothes come with feeling great and that’s something a good eating habit and exercise can do for you.

Another is GROOMING! a well-groomed man exudes confidence and attractiveness too.Keep your hair short and well cut and take care of your skin too. Sean says it all! That being said, opt for clean, clear cuts in clothes that fit your body type. If your body type changes with age, then change the cuts to suit it. You may not need to stop using a particular outfit because you have grown older, just a few adjustments will do,  for instance if you enjoy the blazer and pants look, you could keep doing it as you get older but may decide to opt for pants or shorts that fit you- please don’t go for the baggy ‘dad pants’ and I beg you no skinnies either! Find your fit in jeans as well.

872-282x300SHOES should be played down, no whites running shoes or trainers for that matter and really just your black, beige, brown, navy and any other unpretentious shoes will do. Own good dress shoes in these colors as well as loafers and maybe boat shoes if you do casual a lot.

BLAZERS & SUIT JACKETS in nice basic colors should also make up your wardrobe, you could also add in brighter colors that suit you- red, blue, pastels etc. or patterns too …what ever gives you that burst of energy you need for the moment!

SHIRTS in solid colors and conventional prints like window panes, stripes etc are good for you too. Avoid attention seeking designs so they do not spoil your overall look.you may tend to wear the tie less but when you do, stay away from skinny ties or any other trend driven cuts. The idea is to build a wardrobe that can take you through any trends. And no funny patterns either! no one wants their dad turning up at their business opening Ceremony in a tie that has Sponge bob square pants as its major feature!!!

window pane shirtsWhile on that topic (the faux pas) when you do wear tee shirts, avoid those with any form of expressions on the fronts. They look too desperate and attention seeking! Go for plain tees. Hoodies and overalls (except you’re a farmer), walking around shirtless, in singlets and wrapper(Loin cloth) or Bermuda shorts are all no nos! (over 70s I’m looking at you!) .

Finally, looking good at your age is more about quality and neatness. I’m not saying to go out and spend all your money on expensive suits and ties but when you find a good jacket that’s timeless, you should consider putting down more than the usual for it.Getting pieces like this and finding ways to mix and match, working with separates also buying pieces that can be worn as both formal and casual looks go a long way- It’s OK to roll up the sleeves of your button down shirt while showing off (in a subtle way of course!) your expensive wristwatch,  slip on a pair of loafers or lace up shoes and head on out! remember, the simpler the better!

Shopping for Suits: The Signs of A Good Suit…

Hello again, my sophisticated and suave stylish men! Thanks for keeping our date and for feeding your need to be more informed and stylish everyday!

Today we finish what we began yesterday and if you are fresh on the news please check my previous post:  Shopping for a good suit? what to look for…  on how to find the best kind of suit for you! If you did go out shopping you would have noticed that not only did you have to choose between the various options we talked about yesterday, but quality is of the essence. It’s finding the right quality and fit of a suit that gives you a nod in the right direction when you are with those potential investors or clients.

So how do you know what to check for in a good suit? you want to get value for your money and you may have owned many suits in the past or just be out to get your very first suit but you need to understand how the Pros in the business put value on their products.  Let’s analyse 5 of the most important elements:

HAND STITCHING

The true sticklers for quality insist that all stitching be done by hand! They want full tailoring for their suits, made for their bodies to fit from head to toe, also known as bespoke. Others insist only on the visible parts like arm holes, shoulders and lapels. These are all high priced though.

HORN BUTTONS

Fine suits are fine down to the buttons used to make them. Cheaper suits use plastic but the top of the line use materials like the horn, tortoise-shell etc., that do not easily break and last through time.

DOUBLE BESOMED POCKETS

This is the thin additional layer of fabric on either side of the opening of the inset pocket. When coupled with pocket flaps, the double besom allows the wearer tuck in the flaps of his pockets without looking sloppy! nice huh?

 SURGEON’S CUFFS

Surgeon’s cuffs are the buttons at the end of a suit’s sleeves. The functional purpose of this is to protect the material from fraying but these buttons are meant to be unbuttoned and opened at the sleeves and rolled up if the wearer so desires. In lower quality suits, the buttons are just for show as they do not actually have a placket(opening) neither can they be unbuttoned and rolled up. To many, this detail is the hallmark of a good suit! now you understand why those men you see around have their surgeon’s cuffs unbuttoned-  its to show everyone around that there’s quality in what they are so casually flaunting.

ROLLING LAPELS

The fold of the lapel ideally should not be straight and sharp but soft and fluid like the ocean lapping at the shore… this is the product of elastic and hand sewn interlining which costs a lot more to produce and…you guessed it!… is reflected in the price of the suit!

So there you have it! Now you are well armed to go out there and get the best suit you can for yourself. Do not forget to make sure that you find the perfect fit for your body because no matter how expensive a suit is, it won’t get any nods if it’s hanging off your shoulders or if you have a pool (when your trousers are too long that they gather at the ankle) at your feet.

If you have any contributions to make to this post I would be glad to hear from you ar contributions too and Good luck!

:)) Hugs,

Molekor
