Fashion Protégé Nigeria.

If you’re Nigerian or ever been to Nigeria, you would know that we are a very stylish and fashion driven people. We looove  to explore and create lovely garments with our fabrics, be it the famous Ankara, Voile Lace, Wax prints etc. We are proud of our designs and our designers who have begun to gain their own places in the fashion world’s hall of fame!

So anyway, it’s nice to hear and see the first fashion competition for young upcoming designers take place in Lagos, the fashion capital of Nigeria and i daresay Africa, mmmhm, and I must say the line up of judges are really interesting :well-known designers , Lanre Da Silva Ajayi and Ohimai Atafo, organizers’ DSTV representative Busola Tejumola and Style Editor of Bella Naija, Ijeoma Ndekwu.

As is customary with competitions, a few were chosen from hundreds and in this case, 12 contestants,  to show by talent and creativity, how desirous they are of winning the N 1, 000,000 Naira prize money. Added to that , a sponsored trip to attend the London fashion week (that will definitely be an experience!) , a year’s subscription of DSTV (why not like 5 years or lifetime? they are the organizers, no?), a feature in a yet to be named top fashion magazine, don’t know if it’s local or international ; and the full attention of a popular photographer’s (also unnamed) look book.

The show has already begun and I have my eye (not my money…yet) on a few contestants, Ayodeji, Oluwatobi,Omon, Elvis,…but its a bit too early to tell…. or is it?

It’s obvious I’m not really decided so will let you know in a few weeks (It airs 5  episodes on DSTV channel 151, Thursdays 8 pm WAT). These are the faces of the contestants:

DOI (Designer of Interest)- Thomas Tait.

After his first collection in 2011, Thomas Tait wowed his contemporaries with his beautifully crafted and utilitarian designs and has just been named the recipient of the LVMH Young Fashion Designer Award with prize money of €300,000 and a year-long mentorship from the brand!

 

Tait , a Canadian born designer with British roots was educated both in Montreal and London and is based in London at the moment. He bagged an MA in Womenswear just 3 years ago at Central Saint Martins, London.

Up against 11 other designers, and facing the who’s who in fashion as judges: Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, Raf Simons, Riccardo Tisci, Phoebe Philo,  Nicolas Ghesquière, Kenzo’s creative duo Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, Delphine Arnault, and LVMH executives Pierre-Yves Roussel and Jean-Paul Claverie he came out tops

I am excited for him and wish him the very best! This is definitely a designer that deserves the spotlight  because his talents have shone through in his minimalist, colorful, vibrant designs. I like his attention to cut, detail and structure.

Socks and sandals- Hot? or hmmm….

The socks and sandal trend…. what can I say? it crept into my fashion consciousness about a year or two ago and now it’s all over the runway (you’d think they’d know better!) and the streets. Designers and celebrities, men and women alike have made this fashion faux pas into a trend that has not only taken up a life of its own but is becoming more sophisticated depending on which side of the glass window you’re looking at it from!

If you want to hop on the band wagon however, try this normcore related trend by wearing lighter socks rather than wool,with trendy and attractive shoes to give off a modern feel to it and trying them in opposites, like using two opposite colors in the shoes and socks will definitely make you stand out. If you want to try a subtle way then maybe ankle or calf length socks in a neutral color or the same shade as your shoes will do.

So let me know if you’re a newbie, a pro, would like to try it out or wouldn’t touch this trend with a pole!

Aah fringes! my first reaction was not pleasant not being one to be drawn too much to the 60’s bohemian looks, but you know when a trend comes back, there’s always a bit of a difference. When there’s some modern toppings and detailing added to it , the attraction is irresistible!

You may not want to go out literally swinging from head to toe, like Calvin Klein suggests, but maybe a nice ethnic top in the Roberto Cavalli Collection or Valentino. I love the Valentino collection because of the ‘ethnic in the city’ look and the spillover in the bags…oh yes! you had me at hello! The Calvin Klein Collection features a full-bodied tassel swinging from head to …well, knee in their Spring/ Summer 2014 Collection. Let your super  boho- chic cape fly in this flowy Cavalli top. I also love the other fringe details in the strappy shoes and the tasselled drop necklace. Nice.   Valentino adds an ethic tone to his collection and the accessories definitely completes the look!… The fringed green tote ….I WANT!

Shoe Trends for Spring!

The shoe fest below is just a taste of what’s rocking this season! From Guess to Oscar de la Renta, these shoes will get you jumping to the beat of spring (…or perhaps chirping?)

The black and white (Achromatic) look is here to stay and I just love how classy and sophisticated it makes one…well, me, look! polka dot pointy toe pumps are a must have and get a pair in white while you’re at it!

The pointy toe perforated flats are also a favorite trend and if you like light and bouncy, the espadrilles and sneakers will do just that for you.

For the edgy and expressive, the laser cut sandals or block heels as well as  fringed or crocheted sandals will suit you just fine especially if you dress to make it the star of your look.

Look feminine and chic in mules and floral. Style the floral with a  block colored outfit and for those long romantic walks, dancing and picnicking, try  flats or Birkenstock slides.

One thing’s for sure, you’ll be seeing me in those mules and for that, these trends definitely make a hit on my A list!

From E Tautz to Bottega Veneta, the runways are loaded with it! call it what you like- Royal blue, Classic blue, Sky blue, Cobalt (my best!) , Lapis or even Cerulean. the common denominator for me here is that it’s blue! Notice how good men look in blue? I think the colour is regal, playful, classy and well, masculine!

I know  its tough packing a wash bag for yourself (or your man)when your flight is in 30 minutes and you have to be out the door this minute! look at it this way, if you pack early and always leave your travel kit separate from your every day toilet  bag, then all you have to do is toss it into your already packed case right? problem solved!

…ehm, not quite. Added to that,you have to figure out what to pack that remains relevant no matter where you’re going and how long you’ll be there for so you do not get to your destination wishing you had stopped by the pharmacy at your street corner as you sped past to the airport!
