What’s underneath? Figure Flattering Jeans you can Wear!

Good morning my stylish readers. So,I found a secret worth telling to women like me with more tummy weight than we’ d care to admit! pot belly, muffin tops and whatever else it’s called (the food related names do nothing to help!) can be a put off not to talk of the off-balance look you get when you are trying to put together a killer ensemble  if you know what I mean!

Well, we thank the Lord that there are people always thinking of new ways to make our lives easier fashion wise and although their innovations called shapewear, have made it possible for us to squeeze into dresses a size or two smaller and come out looking smoother than cream, they know that sometimes we just want to put on our clothes without the extra fabric or whatever is used to make these things, and still look …creamy, get what I mean? I know I do! I am one of those who prefers to wear as little as possible underneath if it would still give the same effect, I’m Mrs. Minimalist remember?

One word- SPANX – this all popular label I first heard of from a reality show called ‘Rebel Billionaire’ that lasted just one season even though I had so much fun watching it; by British billionaire  Richard Branson in 2004.

Founder of the brand SPANX, Sara Blakely, then only 29, started her business in the 90s with one bright idea to cut off the legs of her hosiery leaving only her figure slimming panties giving birth to the girdle, the first of her lines of shapewear;  she was one of the chosen 16 contestants vying for an opportunity to be president of virgin Worldwide, Branson’s business empire! She didn’t win, but went ahead to fully prove her brand and is now the youngest female billionaire at age 41!

Sara Blakely

This label we love to love, is known for its form-flattering (and flattening) under layers that smooth, streamline and sculpt the silhouette  has good news- they just added jeans to its portfolio.

The label has already created ready-to-wear items, including leggings, hoodies and jackets in the past, but the jeans mark its first foray into denim.

Currently available in two cuts, the Slim-X and the Signature, the jeans will delight devotees of the label,  So the first question that comes to mind is,what makes the new additions to her empire different? what makes this different from other pairs in the already flooded market with styles that promise all kinds of magical figure-changing effects: thigh-slimming, tush lifting, stomach camouflaging, leg lengthening and on and on?

“The magic of Spanx does not come in the tightness of the jean, but in the Spanx magic tummy panel hidden inside the Slim-X jean and in a uniquely designed wide, shaping waistband on the Signature style. So, all the results are achieved through hidden panels and Triple Thread Technology, ” Blakely told  The Washington Post. “We used the most premium fabrics combined with special-wash treatments to create the softest jeans ever.”

This one reminds me of maternity Jeans though the band is of course cut lower.

If you ask me, I’d say try it out and see. They retail for $148 in their online store/website. Also, you may be happy to find, if you’re already a fan, that you won’t have to worry about heavy branding belying the secret to your trim profile, as the only mark to be found is a red rivet on the back pocket.

So this is the place where I ask, would you wear this? I know I will definitely love to try it out!

hugs :))

NORMCORE TRAINERS

As we all know, normcore is all the rage even in luxury! now that the  recent obsession with colorful 1990s-inspired trainers is winding down, it looks like we’re about to take a more pared-back approach to our footwear what with the sandals and Birkenstocks!

These days, you could wear them with anything from slim pants to shorts and even the vested outfits!

SLOUCHY LOUNGE WEAR IN LUXE LOOKS

For a look that’s not sloppy but gives off a luxe casual weekend look, go for unstructured fuller cut masculine pieces. Bottega Veneta’s range and the Paul Smith range in particular stands out. The fashion houses used up neutral hues and baggy drop crotch shorts and trousers to give off a relaxed weekend vibe. Check out the Emporio Armani for a more fitted structured look:

Styling The Jeffrey Campbell Booties…

Good Morning my Stylish readers, it’s a wet morning here in Abuja and you know how I feel about the rain so you know it’s going to be a late morning! Anyway, I had to do a wardrobe assessment and style some clothes for a friend turned client, Emem. Remember her? my not-so-little black dress story? well, she needed to have her wardrobe assessed to, among other things,  figure out new ways to wear her clothes and then she told me about these Jeffrey Campbell booties she had bought from polyvore that she really liked but just didn’t know how to style  especially given her lifestyle where you know, she was working most of the time.

I gave her a few ideas- skinnies,a lovely ankle length plisse skirt, shorts, onesies etc. We arrived at 3 looks (that was OK for her- she is not the trying out lots of clothes sort of person 🙂 )

For starters though, so she could afford a more serious look with the booties, we decided to shop this really cute chocolate peplum skirt to try out with them and see how it turned out!

IMG_20140724_134850

These beautiful lace up booties was also designed in lace of leaf green, beige, brown (the heels), white and a peep of black.

We started with this matching green top and the peplum skirt I talked about which is one of my best looks, but for the sleeves!!! A sleeveless, cap or small petal sleeves would have rocked this look better but we had too much going on here what with the belts at the wrists and all! this  just took the look to an edge we didn’t like! perhaps with another outfit, another look…. but with this look, we had to keep going.

IMG-20140727-WA0005

With the colors, this look was really awesome! That peplum skirt was a hit! I love the fit, the way it brings out her curves!!

This Salmon pink shirt dress is a good look out for a day out right? the color of the dress makes the booties look more interesting!

IMG-20140727-WA0002

This shirt dress was a really good match too. The salmon pink suits her skin and I love the girly turned edgy look…

…And then there was the ivory silk top with embellishments. She really loved this look  I’m sure you can see why. Really nice look I must say but I’d like you to make some contributions. Which look do you think went best on my stylista here?

Did we do OK?

Meeting Madam Verche.

Madam Verche is the name her friends call her because not only is she the CEO of the famous brand Verche L ‘Art cessoire, but she knows her brand like the back of her perfectly manicured hand! She not only retails some of the best Jewelry in the country ranging from costume to silver and gold; she also creates and designs these unique pieces.

Ibok Offiong, a mother of 3, began her company almost 4 years ago and since then,  has grown it to this wonderful jewelry brand. I sat with her for a few hours at her home and while we chatted I was able to structure these few questions for her,  to give you, my stylish readers an insight to the mind and achievements of this Nigerian Jewelry Designer and retailer:

1. What does Verche L’ Art cessoire mean and what are your achievements 3 or 4 years on?
Verche L’Art cessoire means Vera & Chloe’s Art of Accessories, which are my daughters names. I came up with the name in French because the business was birth in Paris. We have been in business since September 2010 really, that’s over 3 years now and still counting. Some of our achievements include, winning Accessory Designer of the year 2012 by The Nigerian Entertainment Award, Winning YOUWIN award by the Federal Ministry of Finance, Nigeria in May,2013, Being invited to feature on the Plitz New York Fashion week on September 9th 2013, Being featured on Moments with Mo on 26th December 2013 and recently jointly organizing a successful event with 2 friends in Maryland, USA, an event called “All Things Nigerian Expo,2014” on May 26th,2014. Looking forward to more achievements.

My most memorable experience was meeting the Black Peoples Entertainment CEO and her loving and acquiring my piece at the pop up store after the runway show at New York Fashion Week.
IMG_1915-600x399 (1)

Me with TV Personality Ebuka and Stylist Barbie at the ‘Ages of Fashion’ Runway Show in Transcorp Hilton Abuja, which was my first runway show as a brand.

3. What’s your best Verche piece/Accessory /Collection /Line and why is it your best?
I love more than one piece really, and a few of them include the “Zahara” (it’s a tribal loop/coral set), “Rowen Berry” (pearls and links/chain combo), “Ixora”(pearls/toothpick corals combo), “Fleur”(Gold chain/Red Corals) and “Bryony”(multicolored crystals). All this pieces are under our Floral Collections and our “ADORN” Line .
(These pieces are all available at the Verche L’Art cessoire store in Abuja, Address below).
So there you have it! Need I say more? You have been shopping and viewing her pieces the past few days so let me know what you think now that you know the brains… or hands, behind the brand.
Drop by tomorrow if you want more and I know you do, of her new accessories just arrived ! there is also a special Madam Verche Discount to be had, so be the first to shop and wear and, you know, change the game as one of my ‘stylistas’ !

Your Best Statement Jewelry For Work.

Hello Stylish readers, no small talk because I’m so excited- my new-found love for statement  jewelry just stepped up! so now that you have your arms loaded with the right statement jewelry for events, should we perhaps veer to the work side of things?

I know dressing for work can be boring and as if it were not bad enough, some offices give off dress codes like it was promotion worthy! grey, black, navy and anything neutral is the go-to for most work places and that can be daunting… but I say, not entirely! It could also serve as the perfect backdrop for the best of accessories! while you may be sanctioned for wearing out-of-place outfits or colors to work, no one is going to fine you for some really dazzling jewelry can they?… but I’m not saying to go chunky like the rap stars of the 80s or 90s though.

This is what I mean:

IMG-20140720-WA0041IMG-20140720-WA0005IMG-20140720-WA0006IMG-20140720-WA0007IMG-20140720-WA0017IMG-20140720-WA0042IMG-20140720-WA0024IMG-20140720-WA0016IMG-20140720-WA0018IMG-20140720-WA0019IMG-20140720-WA0027IMG-20140720-WA0028IMG-20140720-WA0032IMG-20140720-WA0034IMG-20140720-WA0033IMG-20140720-WA0035IMG-20140720-WA0037IMG-20140720-WA0036IMG-20140720-WA0044IMG-20140721-WA0000IMG-20140721-WA0001IMG-20140721-WA0002IMG-20140721-WA0005IMG-20140721-WA0008IMG-20140721-WA0007IMG-20140721-WA0010IMG-20140721-WA0011IMG-20140721-WA0012IMG-20140721-WA0013IMG-20140720-WA0015IMG-20140720-WA0014

I honestly love these. The simple loops with the green and red pearls, those earrings like rested wings, the corals against the black dress, those huge grey pearls and oh! the art deco intertwined piece of gold, with rich blue stones are probably my best look outs!

Do shop these lovely pieces and start every Monday morning with a spring on your step!

You can find these unique pieces at : http://www.vercheonline.com, or email:  ibok@vercheonline.com.

Hugs as always,

Finding The Right Statement Jewelry For Occasions

I know, I know you’re reading the post topic and thinking, here we go again with the statement jewelry thing again!…. well, you’re right, here we go again but believe me when I say I have good reason- you know I have told you how important statement jewelry is to your quest to being a better ‘stylista’  ? but did I specifically tell you how to wear these statement jewelries?…mmm or did I?

OK Let’s be honest, we African women know how to put it all out when we have a big society wedding to attend or any event that involves us spending hours with the tailor making sure our ‘Aso ebi’ (Occasion Uniform) outfits are made to fit, our make up is top order and let’s not forget the nails and ‘Gele’ (traditional head tie); but so does every other stylish woman who’s going to be attending that same event especially if they share the same ‘Aso ebi’ as you! So ladies,  this is how you stand out, with your accessories! purses, shoes, pins and what we will be talking about today, statement making jewelry!

So how do you get the right accessories that speak volumes without you having to say a single word? that gets conversations started and just refuses to let you lose the smile on your face because of the approving nods and glances coming your way? whether you are the celebrant or the invited, shop jewelry like this when you need to make an appearance and, you know, thank me later!

IMG-20140720-WA0012IMG-20140720-WA0008IMG-20140720-WA0020IMG-20140720-WA0009IMG-20140720-WA0025IMG-20140720-WA0002IMG-20140720-WA0000IMG-20140720-WA0001

Now you know, tell me, aren’t these some good eye candy? Definitely on my A list!
