Fashion From The London Film Festival

LFF Emily blunt in Roland Mouret at the galaHey stylish readers, If you live in London then over the next about two weeks, you will be surrounded by lots of glamor and fashion from the many movie premieres. London Film Festival which celebrates the best in British and International film began yesterday. There was the gala night hosted by IWC and then we had some movie premieres. Here are a few of the red carpet appearances…

I like the Peach and cream-colored dress by Roland Mouret on Emily Blunt. The cut and color suits her so well! You really cannot go wrong in a black dress and JLaw’s Dior dress was a hit don’t you think?…even though I’m not a fan of the blazer/jacket cut dress styles and the dress looks a bit crumped up, but otherwise she did come out cute. There’s the red lipstick on Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams which does make the 17-year-old look so grown up and elegant! not to mention the blue Jacquard dress by Sister Jane she’s wearing!

So, my opinionated stylish readers, what do you think? Drop a word or two ok?

Hugs:))

Rocking Black Tights For The Fall.

tights

Hello my dear stylistas!!! It’s been a few days but I have missed you!!! I really have been working around the clock to get my new site up and believe me when I say it’s easier said than done!!! one thing’s for sure though, it will definitely be worth the wait, I mean what could be better than a cooler, more you-friendly and stylish layout with better and more captivating content? I’m sure you will be ready to forgive a few days of absence for that hm?

Today though, we explore the fashion item that is the black tights. I live in a part of the world that is tropical, which means I really have little or no use for tights, maybe to be worn on a cold night out but honestly I do not own any, but, I do like the way they look when styled in really cool and really short outfits. They help deal with the cold if you live in those regions and with Fall upon us …or upon you, it’s a good idea to get a few ideas on styling them:

Do you have some more ideas on how to style the famous black tights, made popular from the early to mid 1900s? Then drop a line and maybe a photo ok?

Hugs :))

Designer of Interest- Maki Oh

maki oh

Hello my stylish readers, today let’s talk about my current designer of interest, Amaka Osakwe. Amaka is a 27, yep, 27-year-old (born 1987) Nigerian designer that’s beating the odds out there and making her mark on the international fashion scene like very few of her Nigerian colleagues are, I’ve said it before that it’s a great challenge to be noticed in the fashion centres of the world if you do not live in those areas, have a background or shuttle these areas all the time. I’m talking New York, London, Paris and Milan.Well, Maki Oh, which is the name of Ms Osakwe’s fashion label, has beat all the odds! She’s led her womanswear label since 2010 from Lagos, and is one of the few Nigerian-based brands that are globally acknowledged.

Maki Oh of Nigeria 2010

Amaka Osakwe studied at the Arts University Bournemouth where she received a BA in fashion studies. In autumn/winter 2010 she launched her label. Inspired by rural Ghana’s Dipo rites-of-passage ceremony, during which girls taking part are partially naked and ornately adorned, Osakwe has played with cloaking and ornamentation using traditional African fabrics.maki-oh-0_610x397_57

maki oh 3

The Lagos-based designer chooses to use truly homegrown African textile traditions herself, reinventing them in modern ways so that her clothing line is as much a celebration and a retrospective as it is a fashion house. “It’s my only way of keeping my heritage alive, by making it relevant,” she says. The textures of Osakwe’s collections use tediously detailed, age-old methods, like hand-stitched calabash pieces or a beautiful motif called the “Sun-bebe” that’s hand-painted by the queen of the local Ogidi village. One signature of her brand is that it’s dyed by hand using the traditional textile arte process Adire. Another is her way of combining Western silhouettes and native materials and motifs—to wit, a lace-blouse-and-pencil-skirt set appliquéd with unsettling raffia eyeballs.

maki oh first collection 2010maki-oh2010

But it’s never just about tradition: Maki Oh explores what it means to know your past, but is just as interested in what it means to be a contemporary woman at ease with her body and sexuality. For her debut collection, Osakwe painted swirls that circled and accentuated a woman’s breasts, a reference to the ceremonial nudity of a coming-of-age Dipo ritual from rural Ghana and a winking nod to the notion that what might be considered improper in some places is beautiful and natural in others.Osakwe always premises her collection on a story, whether it’s on the Ghanaian rituals or of a woman staring at her self in the mirror, wondering if she’s mad, or yet still, of a woman who is trying to understand her place in this changing society of ours!

Her label was widely discovered by the U.S. fashion scene in 2012, when she presented her designs at the New York Fashion Week. She was also named Designer of the Year by African fashion magazine ARISE.

maki oh 10 Amaka Osakwe of Maki Oh

This year she was nominated for the new LVMH Prize which was a huge surprise to everyone!!! the LVMH group is a Paris based competition and so getting their eyes to reach beyond their shores far into that of this young Lagos based designer, goes to show how distinctive her work is!

Her Spring 2014 Collection:

Style.com commented while reviewing her spring 2013 collection, ”There will probably come a day when Lagos, teeming metropolis that it is, displaces London or New York as a fashion capital for emerging designers. Today, however, Lagos is a place where Internet outages are a daily occurrence. That Osakwe is getting noticed at all is a testament to her extraordinary talent and equivalent potential”

Spring 2013:

Reviewing her Fall 2014 ready to wear collection, they came off with one conclusion in mind-

” There’s a certain naïveté to Osakwe’s work and you sense the hand of the artisan, but the intelligence and aesthetic sophistication guiding her process is so keen, the pieces never come off as artsy-craftsy.”

Celebrities like Solange Knowles,International stars such as singers Beyoncé and Rihanna or Hollywood actress Kerry Washington have discovered the Nigerian designer outfits for themselves. Her designs also have been worn by the likes of Leelee Sobieski and by Nigerian TV presenter Eku Edewor.

While attending a youth event at the Sci-Bono Discovery Center in Johannesburg as part of her big diplomatic trip to Africa in 2013 with Barack, US First Lady Michelle Obama well known for promoting new and otherwise up coming designers by wearing their designs, took to the stage rocking a chiffon blouse from the spring/summer 2013 line of Maki Oh! The First Lady has made her a favourite by inviting her to the white house for her ‘Celebration of Design’ event where designers like Diane Von Furstenberg, Prabal Gurung, Jason Wu, Narciso Rodriguez, Naeem Khan and Georgina Chapman, who have all designed clothes she’s worn, showing from October 8 2014!

maki oh.Michelle-Obama-1What I like about her designs is how they have a strong African sense with her frequent use of Adire but with a global feel of western designs, fabric mixes, cuts and appliques. Her separates are nothing but interesting as they really don’t just make you look and drool but also want to pair them and wear them! I mean look at the pants in her collection! or those blouses and then the minimalist dresses… makes you think of little else long after you’ve viewed them!

Through her collections she tries not  to lose herself and although her designs are attracting more and more international clients, she still has that hold on her origins, able to bring their minds back to what her personal inspirations are!

…Now that is an accomplishment!

Best Fashion Tricks For The Athletic Rectangle Body Shape

rectangle342

OK my stylish people, we are on the fifth and maybe the last of the 5 classic shapes and like the rest, the athletic rectangle/banana/ruler shape has its many pluses. It is a beautiful and most envied body shape in its own right especially when it comes to wearing and fitting clothes. Many women would kill for your shape; there’s no main area you want to minimize so you can get away with more things than most. However you may crave more curves – an illusion easily created with the right clothing. Compared to the other body shapes, you can get away with a variety of garments and outfits. As long as you don’t widen your wide waist even more, you’re good to go! Think Cameron Diaz, Rita Dominic, Nicole Kidman, Hilary duff, Queen Latifah, Cat Deeley, Sheryl Crow… So you know, your crowd is top order, yes?

If you have a Rectangle body shape then it means that your silhouette is fairly straight up and down with a slight masculine look. You’re similar to an Hourglass but without the killer waist. It’s also a common body figure type for women who age, given birth (skin around the waist stretches) or gained weight. You can be a skinny, wiry rectangle like a model, or you can simply be a thicker all over, more average rectangle.  The challenge for you is create a more feminine figure- in other words to create a waist.

rectangle22

You are a rectangle if:

  • Your bust and hips are approximately the same width
  • You have little or no waist definition
  • Your waist measures from 1″ to 8″ smaller than the bust
  • If you gain weight, typically, the weight would distribute evenly throughout your body frame

It’s usually your rib cage that make a Rectangles body figure wide. Simply put, the lack of waist definition but hourglass proportions (top and bottom) indicate that your body shape is straight! This is where the closet strategies from the opposites Pear and Inverted Triangle will come into play – adding dimensions to your body figure, both upper and lower bottom!

Rectangular

Now here are some styling strategies when you’re putting together outfits:

Colors: Bright eye-catching colors help break up your silhouette and give you more shape. You can wear lots of patterns top and bottom, or color block with any color on the top and any other color on the bottom. Mix it up and have fun with the color play!

rectangle33

A good thing about being a rectangle is that you’re free to experiment with various textures and details in various prints, textures and details (ruffles, prints, tiers, studs, beads, etc.) ,Various cuts and shapes (wide leg jeans, tulip skirt, kimono top, etc.),Lots of accessories, Layering fitted clothes etc; but you have to make sure that you keep your waist trim at the same time, this is the simple key to dressing yourself, the most important outfit goal for you. Avoid adding too much interest (unless it’s vertically shaped) around your mid-riff. Wrap a belt around a garment for adding shape to your straight frame and you have your perfect look! Best tips to slimming your waist include:

  • Belts wrapped around your waist
  • Belted tops, sweaters, dresses and jackets
  • Nipped tops, sweaters and jackets
  • Wearing tops with interest from the chest and up along with a bottom with shape. Eg. Boot cut jeans or a pretty A-line skirt.

rectangle2

Avoid stiff and shapeless garments – they only emphasize your rectangle body shape. However you can wear straight styles, such as a straight sheet dress, as long as you add interest to your top (a statement necklace) and bottom (eg. a pair of nice shoes). A skinny belt would also look good with it. You can get away with almost anything – from the trendiest jacket and sweater styles to stylish jeans. Just be sure to kep the jacket nipped at the waist. Lucky you!!!

rectangle96

You could have fun with practically all Pants and Jeans Styles with any amount of details – from skinny/slim to wide leg. take the time to look for styles with details on hips and bottom to add dimension. Anything flowy will look very elegant and soften your boyish frame. With your straight limbs you can pull off tapered and skinny jeans quite well. The trick is to make sure the jeans are tight around your hips to help you create curves. But avoid too-wide flare pants as it can unbalance your rectangle body shape.Flowing linen trousers will look very elegant on you too. Avoid low-rise jeans and trousers can make your torso look too long. The good news is that your figure was made for trousers so have fun with whichever fashionable style catches your eye! Just note that big flares have that tendency to unbalance your streamlined body shape unless you are able to match it up with a top in a soft feminine fabric. Combats and cargos will make you look more boyish too and the look we want should tend towards the feminine…

Your more boyish frame looks great in structured coats, nipped Tops, Dresses, Sweaters and jackets but make sure you highlight your waist. If you’ve got a fuller bust and/or short neck, make sure to show more skin around the neckline with lowish v-necks, scoop necks and wrap tops. They help slim down your chest and visually lengthen your neck. Try a sharp tailored jacket or flared coat, look for styles that stop at the hip and keep your waist nipped using shape or a belt. Avoid slouchy jackets as they won’t create curves for you; also dropped waists will make you look more boyish and if you opt for a tubular coat, make sure it goes with a belt.
rectangle blazers
A long-line tie-belt cardigan can soften you body and highlight your waist instead of a coat or jacket. Do try bias cut dresses or shift dresses with shape but know that a very straight sheath won’t create any curves for you, neither will dropped waists as they will make you look more boyish. If you’re a lucky busty rectangle go for a lower neckline. If not, go for a higher neck and show off your sexy back or legs , again, anything that is nipped at your waistline or right below your bust (eg. Empire waist) is good for you . It’s super important to make sure the nipped shape is at your waistline or just below your bust – this will help make your bust bigger and ‘push them up’ and add some weight on top and make your waist look smaller at the same time.
rectangle jackets
Examples are:
  • Scoop neck
  • Sweetheart
  • Bustier
  • Halternecks and slash necks are great on you.

If you are well endowed I suggest wearing necklines that show more skin and vertically break up your chest, such as low V and scoop necks. Wrap styles are very flattering on you as they tailor your mid-riff and make it look trimmer as well as complementing your bust without over-accentuating them. Make sure you add a camisole if the wrap neckline is very low – this helps add dimension to your rectangle body shape.

Rectangle-Example-Cameron-Diaz

Your best dresses feature:Voluminous hips, Prints, textures and details from the bust and up. Just add a black belt to trim your waist and a full light or bright color worn with a waist belt to nip that waist! Yes, it’s all about that waist!

rectangle29

Layer fitted tops to create the illusion of curves. If you’ve a small bust you’re one of the few shapes who can wear polo necks.

Give in to the temptation to wear frills, ruffles, bibs, rosettes,  and bows because they work well on tops for you. Round, high necks and slash necks are flattering and you can wear spaghetti strap and racer back vests. However, Sweetheart necklines are tricky for smaller busts. Crop tops and shrugs will elongate your torso and baggy tops and tunics won’t give you a waist. If you like a top but the neckline is a little too low or it’s short on the body layer a long plain color camisole underneath. These will help add more curves on top and make your waistline look thinner.
You’re lucky because you’ll be able to pull off a tremendous variety of top styles, especially the ones with lots of interest and details! Make sure these details are placed on top – shoulder to bust area to avoid highlighting your waist. If a bow or ruffle detail falls right above your mid-section, nip it with a belt.
rectangle34

Other details to look for:

  • Breast pockets (be careful with casual, slouchy and low pockets as they tend to draw attention to your undefined waist)
  • Front panel detail
  • Pleating
  • Lace details along the shoulder and sleeve area
  • Button down shirts are your best friends but make sure they’re slightly nipped at the waist, or simply add a belt or wear them with unbuttoned cardigans.

rectangle2020

All skirt styles will look fab on your figure From A-line to full circle, pencil, paneled, layered, to ruffle and tiered skirts. Focus on girly & flirty skirts and dresses that will give you a feminine shape. Skirts with ruching and gathering and if you love prints- go for it!!!With your body shape you likely have great legs so show them off in shorter hems! The A-line skirts will give you that girly shape, Showcase gorgeous pins with a shorter skirt and do look cute in curve-creating pencil and tulip skirts! Just be sure to avoid, especially if you’re tall, the not-long-enough maxi… boy do I not like those for any body type!!! Jumpsuits however, are a great alternative for rectangle shapes and they are so on-trend! Angular A-line skirts will make you even more shapeless. Focus on box pleat styles and gathering details around the waistline. Trumpet skirts look nice on you. Avoid too full or fluffy skirts as they can make you bottom-heavy and create unbalance to your rectangle body shape.

Top Tip: Tuck in your shirt or top to create shape. If you’re short-waisted or a Petite, I suggest wearing a top that is similar in color as the skirt to avoid breaking up your torso. However, interest at the shoulders and shoulder pads can help raise your upper body.

Modern shapewear can work wonders for your body shape. Even if your Rectangle figure needs no slimming it can still give a smooth line and create shape. Notice how a  good bra will make a small bust look more full, especially if it’s push up too! A corset will give any woman killer curves! Just stay away from minimiser bras as what you really do need are bras that will boost you! and oh….Get rid of any old, unsupportive bras! mmh hmm.

rectangle jewelryAccessories are your best closet investments and an affordable way to add curves and texture to your straight rectangle body shape without having to think too much about what clothing cut and styles you need to wear: Just add a pair of statement shoes and you’ve added some curve to your lower body! That’s how easy it is!

Accessories such as jewelry, scarves, bags and belts are a rectangle body shape best closet investmentsCourtesy: Modcloth, Pink Mascara, ASOS

With an even, streamlined figure like yours you can wear pretty much what you want on your feet – so have fun! for instance, You’ll look amazing in stilettos and kitten heels and ballerina pumps are also perfect on you, try to avoid welly like knee boots with no shape and while loafers may suit you, you may end up looking a bit too boyish. but if you’ve got great legs then try on trendy tights and leggings. You could actually choose from lace, wet look or brightly coloured leggings.

rectangle1

When it comes to jewellery and bags think subtle and elegant or angular and modern to suit your streamlined shape.Avoid waist length bags because they draw attention to your straight frame. However you can wear them as long as they’re subtle in style and color (eg. Handbags with minimal details in dark neutrals).

Belts, Belts, Belts!!! These are your absolute best wardrobe investments that trim your waist in a flash. It’s the last-minute solution to trimming your waist as well as a stylish final touch to your ensemble.I recommend investing in dark-colored belts (black, dark brown, navy blue, dark green, dark grey, etc.) to maximize the waist slimming effect- details and light colors placed on your waist can visually add pounds to that area, especially if your waist is already wide or undefined. Avoid belts with lots of horizontal details as they will make your waist look bigger. Instead look for vertical interest that draw the eye up and down like tassels, dangling chains, belt ends that hang vertically and vertical shaped belt buckles. Contrasting prints and details will help slim your waist – just make sure they have a dark color base.

If you have a bit of a muffin top I suggest wearing belts with a bit of stretch to keep it tucked in. Bulky materials (eg. thick, stiff leather) tend to emphasize the area it is placed on, however it can be worn with a woven (slightly stiff material) to help camouflage your full tummy.

rectangle8

Finally, wearing long strings of beads look great against a smaller bust; Statement jewelry such as a chunky necklace or a pair of trendy earrings help drawing the eye to your upper body.

Accessories are great for adding curves on a monochromatic (similar colors worn from top to toe) outfit. Just be careful with their placement. One rule of thumb is to keep your waist free from vertical details. In fact, the simpler you style your waist, the better and trimmer it will appear.

If you’re a Petite make sure that you select accessories that are simple in style and color to avoid overwhelming your short stature and be sure to avoid choker style necklaces with high neck tops.Notice the interest Print and bright-colored scarves brings to your outfit? Try to explore that….

rectangle9

Finally( Did I say that before??): Having covered all other major body types, I must add this: Be open for a secondary body type. You may not exactly be a Rectangle, so you probably have a secondary body type. There are different varieties of the Rectangle body shape. You may have a full and curvy bottom, leaning towards a Pear – or maybe you have a wide chest along with extra weight around the midriff that need some of the styling tricks from the guide for Apples.

So try to be flexible and follow the guidelines for both your primary and secondary body figure!

Nice Chat!

Fashion Tricks for the Dreamy Hourglass Shape.

hourglass3

Hello again, my stylish readers, today, it’s the curvy and all proportionate hourglass shape that have the floor. Your shape is the ‘ideal’ shape which means every look put together by other body types seek to achieve what you already have naturally! I  sound biased right?but it’s true! This is the silhouette fashion and personal stylists strive to create on their models or clients. Having the curves on the right places indicates femininity and is appealing to the eye. Think Scarlett Johansson, Sofia Vergara, Marilyn Monroe and Selma Hayek! good company huh.

hourglass7hourglasshourglass Tiwa-SavageHourglass-Shape halle berry

The reason your body shape is considered ideal is because of its proportions and defined waist. the bust and hip are about the same size, and the waist is narrow. This gives you a set of sexy, killer curves. Yes they all come in different sizes – you can be a skinny, average or curvy/full hourglass. And no, you don’t need to have a big bust to be an hourglass! It’s all about that trim waist of yours.

hourglass22

When dressing your hourglass figure, look for styles and fabrics that reduce bulk and prevent boxiness. Also look for pieces that draw attention to your narrow waist.Tops and dresses should nip in at the waist without adding bulk to your bust. Extra bulk on your bust will throw your proportions out of sync so you need to learn not to drown it in too-baggy clothes but also not go too overtly sexy either – unless that’s the look you’re going for! always avoid shapeless baggy jumpers or clothes that will hide your wonderful waist. Again, make sure to keep your top relatively simple and smooth to complement your feminine hourglass body shape. If you want to wear a ruffle or detailed top, or a funky necklace, you’ve got to be careful with their placement on your frame. Focus on clothes with vertical details such as pleats, vertical prints, buttons placed downwards, etc.

hourglass body dress

Look for snug, tailored pieces. Everything from your casual t-shirts to your button-down blouses should be fitted, nipping in slightly at the waist. Stretchy materials hug your curves and work especially well if you have a flat stomach.Wear a lowish neckline to slim down your torso. If you have a muffin top then try not to wear anything too fitted around the waist, wear clothes that skim past the area and make sure you add some interest on top and bottom to make your waist look thinner. Wear tops that extend below your hipbone to further slim you down. A top that stops just short of your waist will accentuate your curves, but if you would rather slim your curves down, look for a top that lengthens your torso by extending just below your hipbone or past your thighs. Try a fitted cardigan with the top buttons undone. Lengthen a short torso with vertical stripes.

hourglass2

Stick to short, shaped jackets. Look for belted jackets, trench-style coats, or other fits that draw in toward the waist. Short jackets that stop just above your hips or like cropped jackets accentuate your curves in a flattering way.Jackets that hit above or below your behind are best as they emphasize your waist. When a jacket ends at the rear it makes your already full rear look bigger. Try fitted button-under-the-bust blazers as they will look fabulous for your figure. Avoid baggy boyfriend jackets and swing coats, and stay away from slouchy, shapeless styles. Drop-waisted coats are a definite no-no for you so stay away from them.

hourglass jacket

Go for soft fabrics like knits and silk blends. These materials gently drape over your natural curves, keeping your bust in proportion with your hips. Avoid stiff fabrics, since these may end up making you look boxy.

hourglass33

Wear low, slimming necklines. Look for V-necks, V-neck halters, sweethearts, and scoop necks. Narrow necklines slim down your bust, keeping it looking balanced, and low necklines draw the eye closer to your narrow waist. Avoid wide necklines like boat necks and squares, since these tend to make you look top-heavy.Wear tops that are short or that extend just below your hipbone or past the thighs.

Your curves were made for dresses – so have fun! Just stick to styles that highlight, not hide your waist. Consider a wrap blouse or dress. Wrap tops and dresses pull the fabric in at the skinniest part of your waist, drawing the focus to your waist without adding any extra volume to your bust. Hourglass figures with a short waist or petite figure may not like this style, however, since it often falls out at the wrong part of their waist. Wrap dresses and back-tie styles will work that waist, You’ll look fab in ‘Fit and flare’ and strapless dresses as they suit your shape to no end. Empire line and straight sheaths are a ‘no’ for you. If you’re busty avoid frills and bows on the bodice, if you’re heavy on the bottom skip tight skirt styles.

hourglass5hourglass1hourglass32

Go for classic skirt cuts. A-line and pencil skirts are universally flattering. They work well for hourglass figures because they hug your curves and keep things streamlined. Your feminine figure loves flirty skirts. Go for those that fall from the waist and not sit on your hips. Pencil skirts and A-line skirts will both be flattering. Try a full circle skirt for a fun fifties look! Also, knee-length skirts will work better than maxi length. Avoid tight stretchy skirts as they may look at tad too sexy! Fishtail skirts may bring out your bottom too much and flounce numbers will hide those curves completely.

hourglass-skirts-1

Avoid volume-enhancing details. Stay away from ruffles, bows, and other dimensional details that add volume. If placed at the bust, these details may make you look top heavy. If placed at the waist, they detract from your waist’s natural narrowness.Wear voluminous skirts. Look for dresses and skirts in full circle and tulip cuts especially if they have a high waist. These cuts hug your hips and hang off them naturally, which accentuates your curvy lower half without adding bulk.

Look for pants that have a slight flare. Think wide-leg and boot-cut styles. The flare keeps the bottom portion of your leg in balance with your wide hips. This also creates a longer, slimmer appearance for your legs.Wear skinny-leg pants with caution. Skinny jeans make most hourglass figures look short and stout. If you have naturally long, lean legs, though, you may be able to get away with a tight-fitting skinny jean, especially if you pair it with high heels that add extra length to your leg.Stick with mid-rise or high-rise pants. Avoid low-rise pants, since these may make your hips look wider and your legs look shorter. Mid-rise and high-rise cuts elongate the leg. Styles with wide waist-bands are especially flattering.Avoid bottoms with too many details at the hip. Your trousers should have flat fronts and pockets without flaps or large buttons. You should also avoid decorative embellishments or other decorations at the hip.If you’ve slender thighs give slim legs a try!To avoid adding width to your legs and hips, wear leggings with long length tops also. If you’ve bigger thighs steer clear of skinnies. Don’t hide a curvy bottom in very slouchy jeans. Combat style side flap pockets will just add bulk too.

hourglass4hourglass jeans

Stick with solid colors. Muted patterns may also work, but solid colors flatter your figure best. You’ll look great in a solid color head to toe because you’ll create a nice long lean line against which to show off your hourglass shape. You can also wear light on the top and dark on the bottom or the other way around depending on what you are making your focal point. The eye will go to the light or bright area, not the dark one.You can “color block” by having contrasting shades above your waist and below your waist, or you can stick with a single, solid color top or dress to keep your bust evenly balanced with your hips.Wear dark colors and vertical stripes if you want to downplay your curves. Some hourglass figures would rather look thin and not curvy. If this describes you, slim down your upper half by wearing dark colors, vertical stripes, or vertical pleats.

hourglass72

Choose the right undergarments. A supportive bra will help you lift and tame your bust, giving your upper half the right proportions. If you’re a slightly uneven hourglass use shapewear to bring more balance by slimming either your top or bottom half. Try magic knickers if you’ve a pronounced tummy. Balconette bras are ideal with square neck tops. Note that any unsupportive old bras should go in the bin! Baggy T-shirt style nighties are no good for you or baggy tee shirts altogether.

The right shoe or belt can flatter your figure by drawing attention to your curves and slimming down your thicker portions.Wear dark belts around your natural waist.Fashionable waist belts are your best friends. A belt worn around the narrowest part of your waist acts as the focal point of your entire outfit. Skinny belts often work for hourglass figures of all heights, but wide belts may shorten the torso if you have a short waist or petite height. If you have love handles or extra weight around your tummy, stick to belts with a slightly elastic material. Thick materials tend to add bulk and emphasize your cute pudge. To avoid the extra midriff bits from spilling over, wear the belt with a woven top or dress. Don’t worry about the slightly rigid (stiff) fabric – it’ll conceal your midriff and the belt will keep the outfit from looking boxy on you. If you have a short waist, make sure the belt has a similar hue (eg. black with dark navy) as your top to help you keep up a streamlined, lean silhouette.

hourglass shape

Most accessories will look great on hourglass curves – just remember not to unbalance your perfect proportion, you could try retro round button earrings for a cute look… however, hip belts will only emphasize a bigger bottom so that’s a no go area for you and huge angular jewellery will detract from your curves too so try to play it down or use feminine earrings that fit your feminine look.

Look for slimming heels and rounded or curvy toe shoes to suit your shape. Also, Peep toe high heels will give you instant glamour and complement your curvy hourglass body! Your curvy hips may make your legs look thick and short when you wear flat shoes. Heels elongate the leg, however, creating a slimmer, better proportioned look.Think curvy to complement that hourglass figure and not pointed or angular shoes. Ankle boots with skirts will hide those elegant ankles and very pointy shoes look better with more boyish bodies so use them to a minimum if at all.

Draw attention to your neckline with the right necklace. A bright splash of color at your neck can add personality to your outfit. Look for short necklaces that hug your neck or long necklaces that come down in a “V.” A long necklace like this with a pendant close to the breast or waistline will draw attention to your waist while necklaces that hang low and wide over your chest may make it look larger and unbalanced. Because of your curvy hips, your thighs and legs need shoes that are simple to visually lengthen your lower body. So avoid ankle straps (however, T-straps are slimming) or details that visually shorten your legs. Some shoes you’ll love are cone heels, Wedge heels and shoes in similar tone as your skin tone.

Note and Note Again that If you have short and/or curvy legs you should add heels if you’re wearing skinny pants. Shortening the legs of an hourglass body shape make them look frumpy and you’ll seem more of a Pear.

There you have it lucky ladies, show off your shape in creative and classy ways and rock those curves!

Fashion From The Top Abuja Clubs meet up by VYBZ.

Hello Stylish readers, happy independence day to all my Nigerian brothers and sisters as yesterday was our 54th birthday. How did I spend it? resting!!! The eve of our independence day saw me at the Riverplate Gardens  where VYBZ had a packed and rocking meet up for the top 10 clubs and lounges in Abuja and I guess the aim was to get all their exclusive members to meet at one place where they could socialize and… you know, meet up.

There was a very busy blue carpet to go with the event and we were there to take photos of the fashionable looks of the night…

Fashion (…and my take) From The Nigerian Native And Vogue Fashion Week.

The Native and Vogue fashion week was a 3 day event organised for established fashion brands in Nigeria and Africa to show off their stuff and then offer a platform and an opportunity for new designers to also find an entry way into the mainstream of fashion in Nigeria and depending on the reach of this organization, I guess globally.

This they did some days ago and true to their word, there was a show of awesome pieces by the ‘already established’ brands. So while we are on that subject, first question:  when we call a brand already established in Nigeria, what really do we mean? do we say this because most of us in the big cities have heard their names and seen their work on the runway for a long time? or do we say they are established because they record handsome amounts of profits at the end of each financial year and these numbers grow astronomically every year? more than that do we say this because we know that their clothes are in every high-end store or boutique in the country?or do we say this because they clothe our local celebrities which make up about 2% of our population? now which of these would apply to the brands shown below do you think? this is one question that has long been at the top of my fashion conscious mind begging for answers so forgive me if I seize this occasion to ask…

No doubt, our designers have worked hard over the years not only in showing that creativity is not exclusive to a certain region in the world but that we can come up with collections worthy of international acceptance; but  we all know that it is not an easy feat for any serious designer who has not moved to the known fashion cities in Europe and America to become a globally accepted brand. It takes much more than being creative.I do not think starting out the right way is a problem for us here, the challenge begins in knowing how to expand and in a way that is accessible to your target market. What does it take for a fashion brand to be successful? that is a topic for another day but I will say this, any designer who wants to make it big and by big I do not mean in their city alone but nationally (let’s start there…)has to learn to be business savvy. It goes beyond the runways which by the way is a good way to be noticed and to get financial backing; and it also goes beyond clothing the really small percentage of celebrities and perhaps rich clients who can afford your products, I mean let’s be real, how many of them do we have in Nigeria? maybe if you were clothing this small percentage globally you would be driving to the bank in your limo like the Oscar de la Rentas and the Pradas of this world but can you do that in Nigeria? and really is there any fashion brand in Nigeria that has that wide a reach in this country? in their clothes, or accessories? A store that gets to retail your brand will only buy wearable clothes which they can sell to their customers and not the ‘couture’ we see on the runway. Are such negotiations being made?…um just asking…

Utilizing the social media, blogs, making affordable collections and items that will make money for you, lending your brand name to companies that make other products that you may not be able to produce like bed sheets, towels etc are only a few ways to get the money rolling. Everyday, designers around the world are looking for more ways to reach the ‘shopping masses’ for a healthy turnover. Are we doing the same here?

As someone who lives in Abuja which is a major city in Nigeria, the only way I get to know about these brands besides the use of social media and magazines are by word of mouth and blogs, I really cannot say if any of these ‘established brands’ go beyond that but I could be wrong… Granted, social media as well as online stores, blogs and magazines are the next level in getting any brand out there but in Nigeria folks, where our delivery system though we know is still on the way to ‘getting there’ is not as close as I would allow for my N300k (almost $1,900) dress or even N100k ($625)worth clothing, to be sent if I so decided to buy one online which could be my only given option. So, is there any hope of an average Joe entering a store say in Port Harcourt, no matter how ‘select’ the store may be, to shop these brands like we now do with indigenous make up brands? or do all of them only focus on making ‘bespoke’and ‘couture’ pieces that are made to order?

The big question remains, how established are they? I’ll leave you to answer that if you can, while I show you some really awesome collections shown off the runways of the 3 day show:

…Like I said, really awesome! Zizi Cardow is a brand I heard about and loved years ago. She made me love the new ways of using the Ankara fabric to make contemporary designs for clothing. She seemed to have disappeared under the radar but here she is with her collection and again I’m in love. I like how she manages not to make her designs over the top but still infuses her creativity on her brand. Designers like Ade Bakare and Kosibah whose brands span across continents, give their designs a more international feel although they are more averted to designing wedding dresses,  then there’s the House of Bunor who I think has a strong hand on evening gowns and the such… I love the simplicity and cut of this designer, Yomi Casual and the other African designers like KlukCGDT and Naked Ape also brought a refreshing feel to the show I think.

If you ask me I’ll say they were right when they used the term ‘…a fresh runway’. I like the new names like Johnson Johnson and Revamp. I think Revamp ought to follow-up on that butterfly concept for their retail pieces because I absolutely loved it every time they appeared on an outfit! … or maybe it’s because I love butterflies? is anyone with me on this? Well, if you are, send a comment OK?
